Hace cuatro años decidí cambiar de vida, decidí romper con los esquemas y salir corriendo de una vida que no me pertenecía, de un trabajo que sencillamente no me hacía feliz. Trabajaba en una universidad, mi cargo, era uno que en teoría se vinculaba con lo que había estudiado: jefe de emprendimiento.

Era el trabajo más aburrido, sin sentido y estresante que había tenido, y sin embargo, al tener un sueldo interesante, quería convencerme de que era una buena oportunidad. Aguanté 11 meses, largos meses en los que varias veces me planteaba la opción de renunciar, pero siempre lo aplazaba, porque ese salario no lo podría conseguir fácilmente.

Por otro lado me decía a mí mismo que no podría tener en mi hoja de vida un trabajo tan corto, que eso podría afectarme profesionalmente, lo que hizo que casi durara un año (de infelicidad).

Un día decidí hacer las cuentas que te voy a mostrar y basándome en una de las frases de Juan Diego Gómez, tirar la vaca por el precipicio renunciar a mi trabajo, y empezar a identificar porqué sentía tanto miedo, me propuse a dejar lo que estaba haciendo, así sintiera que lo estaba tirando todo y empezar de ceros. Las cuentas entonces fueron:

  1. La mayoría de las personas trabajan 8 horas al día, durante un promedio de 40 años (de los 20 a los 60), esto quiere decir que aproximadamente trabajas durante la tercera parte de tu vida productiva. Si trabajas en un lugar que no te da felicidad, estás botando a la basura la tercera parte de tu vida.
  2. Muchas personas que viven en ciudades principales deben trabajar lejos de sus casas. Si vivimos a aproximadamente a 1 hora y 30 minutos de nuestros hogares, en 8 años habremos pasado un año adicional en el transporte, quiere decir que por cada 8 años pierdes uno, metido en el tráfico.
  3. Un estudio de Forbes muestra que el 66% de las personas NO DISFRUTAN DE SU TRABAJO, que simplemente lo hacen porque ‘les toca’. No necesariamente lo odian, pero definitivamente no lo disfrutan.

Yo no quería ser parte de las estadísticas, quería quedarme por fuera de estos números y aunque no sabía el camino exacto que iba a tomar, sabía que mi perseverancia, disciplina, fe y motivación debían ser lo suficientemente fuertes para lograr mis objetivos (de algún modo que en ese momento no hubiese podido explicar).

Antes de renunciar (siempre he sido arriesgado pero calculador), decidí probar varias cosas que a modo de negocio me podrían hacer feliz y que no necesitaba mucho dinero para iniciar.

Empecé a darme la oportunidad de probar cosas nuevas, y me di cuenta que tenía intereses diversos pero que no podría vivir de ellos tan rápidamente como pensaba. Lo que hice entonces fue renunciar, pero pedir que me contrataran como docente de emprendimiento, en la misma Universidad.

Empecé a trabajar unas 20 horas a la semana y ganar mucho menos de lo que ganaba en mi cargo habitual, pero conseguía el activo más importante del siglo XXI: el tiempo.

Con este tiempo libre me dediqué a trabajar en ideas de negocio que me interesaban. Le puse muchísimo empeño y aunque las 4 primeras ideas que inicié terminaron en aprendizaje* (palabra para describir un estrepitoso fracaso en términos de emprendimiento), la 5 idea hizo que todo valiera la pena, y hoy puedo decir con orgullo y felicidad que esa decisión que tomé impulsado por el deseo de cambio, hoy me hace ser parte de los fundadores de una organización que da empleo a casi 50 personas en 6 países diferentes.

Mi consejo es simple, pero a la vez retador: si tu trabajo no te satisface, despide a tu jefe, puede sonar absurdo y puede ser doloroso al comienzo, pero mucho más doloroso es llegar a tu lecho de muerte con el remordimiento de no saber qué habría podido pasar si hubieras intentado un camino diferente. Que el miedo no nuble tus decisiones, y que tú motivación sea mucho más fuerte que el temor a lo desconocido.

A veces todo esto puede parecer una locura, pero es más importante dejar a un lado esas emociones de miedo, incertidumbre, ansiedad etc., y pensar más con cabeza fría en qué es lo mejor para ti. 

En la mayoría de ocasiones somos infelices porque le hacemos más caso a nuestra mente emocional que a la racional.  Si vemos en retrospectiva todo con la razón las decisiones se vuelven más simples y finalmente tienen soluciones a nuestro alcance, pero muy seguramente no las vemos porque nuestra mente emocional nos nubla la salida.
